Frederic Chiu's transcription of the "Pastoral" Piano Sonata for String Quartet originated from his first exercise learning a piece without using the piano. Years later, he prepared the score and parts for actual performance by a String Quartet. It was premiered at the Newport Music Festival in 2017 by Irina Muresanu, Gabriela Diaz, Mark Berger and Sergey Antonov.
